William (Will) Chesternut

William (Will) Chesternut

As Will went through puberty, his face started suffering. But it wasn't the standard pimples and big-nose phase that so many others go through. Will's head started to seriously balloon outward in a way that baffled his dermatologist. Will's eyes and mouth elongated as his head grew, but his nose and ears started to look awful small compared to his huge cranium. Eventually they became so small they could barely be seen with the naked eye.

Will was the butt of countless jokes. When the changes started to happen, he got teased. When his head grew even bigger, he got beat up by the bullies. His basketball coach decided not to play him because he was afraid his head would be mistaken for the ball.

So then Will stopped going to school all together for a while. But his momma wouldn't stand for that. Her son wasn't going to be a dropout. So back to school he went, and the jokes just kept coming. It was miserable for him, and his momma couldn't afford to take him to one of those special doctors to try and fix the problem. Instead she tried to encourage him by telling Will that he could be anything he wanted to be.

After feeling sorry for himself for the first two years of high school, Will finally listened to his momma. One day he made a decision. He decided he was going to prove to everyone that he wasn't just some freak. He was going to outshine everyone else in every way he could. So he applied himself.

Will got in his books and his grades improved dramatically. He started pumping iron in hopes that the size of his muscles would one day match the size of his head. He got better at basketball, and convinced the coach to let him play. Soon he was the highest scorer on the team. When Will graduated, he was MVP of the basketball team and Salutatorian in his class.

The negative side of his new outlook on life was his complete lack of a social life. Will didn't really fit in any more than he had before. In his mind, he had succeeded in proving himself better than everyone else and he despised the majority of his classmates. He left the school with no enemies. But he also left the school with very few friends.

Will still wanted to be the best, so he set his sights on being a Navy SEAL. And he achieved that dream. He proudly served the country for three years before meeting his only close friends and fellow Smiley Faces, Bob and Joe.
